Do you think it may be your delivery of the subject?
What I mean is, do you think your approach to it is something he finds uncomfortable? I know my wife doesn't respond well when I get to intense about it. I disguise it with humour and often just laugh at the craziness as I throw in some of the details but I keep it light.
