Verizon will patent this technology, and people will be free to reject its place in their home by terminating their service with Verizon. An inconsiderate inconvenience, to be sure, but not totalitarianism - not yet. Some people may enjoy the service; it is basically an extension of what search engines already do in trying to tailor advertisements to their users.
The real threat will come when the government commandeers this patent for national-security purposes, and mandates that one be installed in every home.
