First, in general, people (the larger herd) tend to attack those who do not conform to herd-think and who are individualistic and display indicators or desires of self-sufficiency. This is a betrayal of the paradigm of the peacefully grazing herd (the norm) and it is perceived as a threat by the herd.
Those who stray are routinely attacked.
Secondly, 'the state' sees such people as a potential threat and as a potential infestation that may spread. This must be stopped or contained at all costs. the propaganda arm of 'the state' (the MSM) are instrumental in demonizing, ridiculing or otherwise marginalizing this threat.
