I am paid waaaaay too much for what I do. One third of my agency could be eliminated, me included, and operations could continue just fine. My skill set has suffered in the 17 years that I've been a state worker, and I haven't learned anything new that would make me marketable at my wage level in the private sector. I've become complacent and pretty fricken lazy. I've worked at 5 different agencies and they all suck! Very few workers are overworked.
I've learned that my union is for crappy workers who can't cut it in the real world. All they do is challenge managers and directors who try to mess with crappy employees who don't show up to work, call in sick all the time, cry workers' comp, discrimination, or "reasonable accommodations."
I have to quit to get what I paid into my retirement out.
I've been working on getting something going on the side, on my own. Once I can generate enough income to cover my living expenses, I'm out. It'll be nice to rely on my ingenuity again.
When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign: that the dunces are all in confederacy against him. ~J. Swift
