The Speaker Has More Power Than The Other Congressmen

Besides a valuable national bully pulpit, he is usually given the power to negotiate for the party. He also has a major say in what it voted on and what will not be voted on. We just saw his influence to choose or reject committee members. I do not understand why the speaker is given so much power by people who were elected to exercise their own power. Why can't we eliminate that position? The only "leadership" that we need in Congress are some powerless parliamentarians who can keep the main body of Congress flowing.
