I have often heard the suggestion the military wouldn't ever turn on the American people, I don't really buy it and here is why:

The gov't can control the message far better than any protesters against the gov't in a time of crisis. If the gov't controls the message (and they would control what soldiers hear more tightly then even the rest of the nation) then they can distort the picture and make protesters into rioters or rioters into homicidal murders.

I think the day our soldiers were faced w/ the choice of American people or gov't gov't, the gov't will be trying (and likely succeeding) at creating the illusion that it is really the American people/gov't vs. domestic terrorists - thus making it far more likely the military will fire on US citizens.
