Definitely look more into yeast for health, as it can be very, VERY beneficial to your health. The health-related problems you heard about is probably a yeast overgrowth due to poor diet, not the yeast itself.
There's a "good" and "bad" of everything with food - yeast is no exception.
I'd go to say virtually everyone would benefit from increasing good yeasts in their diet. Try kombucha drinks, pure & natural yogurt, kimchee, miso, natto, and this delicious home-made soda the original poster has mentioned. I haven't drank commercial sodas in years due to them essentially being poison, but I have been enjoying home-made sodas and they are great! Great for health and taste!
