He may want to take a gun with him

England's crime rate is significantly worse than the U.S., affecting a far larger percentage of the population than in the U.S.

For example, England's rate of assault is 133% greater than the U.S., car theft is 20% more common in England, rape is 125% more likely. What's more is the police are considered about 20% less effective in England than our own Keystone cops in the U.S.

To top it off, people in the U.S. have a greater perception of safety than the people of England. The difference is 17%, in favor of the U.S.

Murders are rare in most countries, including the U.S. However, murders in England are more rare than in the U.S. As a number, however, it is quite small versus the size of the population. We have approximately 9000 gun murders in the U.S. each year, but we lose about 195,000 to medical mistakes in hospitals.

If Piers doesn't mind living in a nation where he is much more likely to be assaulted or robbed or have to deal with corrupt officials in exchange for more safety from a highly unlikely event (murder), then I wish him well.

But I suggest he take a gun.
