Tobacco, smoking and disease?

I have wondered if at least some of the ill effects or toxicity associated with tobacco smoking has to do with the pesticides and other chemicals associated with the growing, processing, and storage of tobacco? Some of those additives may well be more harmful to smokers than the tobacco itself.

I wish that somebody would treat tobacco the same way they treat food and (floridated) tap water, and make a distinction between consumption of the material itself, and the unpleasant if not dangerous additives that go into growing, processing, and perhaps marketing.
