One thing we most certainly have to memorize
Is the alphabet. Imagine having to look up each letter each time you wanted to read. Times tables are good. And certain other things... Point taken.
However, as to the question of "standardized" tests - why test kids at all? This again is the product of the schooling system, so invisible an assumption that you didn't even see it yourself.
