umm, you miss the context of the council of trent.

The council was formed to determine what the official teachings of the church are/were. Of course if you don't want to adhere to the teachings of the church then you will not be allowed to associate yourself with the church (i.e. you will be excommunicated)this was to make sure people could not go around and teach any old thing in the name of the church as many were at the time. As for the justification for repentance requiring a priest, I think that is generally due to human nature. If you can simply forgive yourself you will never turn inward and examine your conscience. This leads quickly to never admitting you have done anything wrong. It is more a check on human nature than a law of god.
