Maybe it's because they'd have to admit to themselves that they, in some small way, contributed to the problems we now face....

Those two statements are one. Most people, Obomba, just don't think. Really, they don't. Perceiving things comes down to if the mind is used. Most people think little. It's no wonder they're incapable of abstraction and conceptualization. Those two activities are thinking's foundation. The people who don't do those activities grasp reality weakly or not at all.
