NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — It’s nearly impossible to overstate the role Apple Inc. plays in the U.S. stock market.

One would have to go back more than three decades to find a public company with a remotely comparable ability to jolt Wall Street, and even then the scenario doesn’t come close.

“Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has the most impact of any issue in history,” said Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Indices. Read: Apple shares still below biggest target cuts.

“The closest is [International Business Machines Corp.] back in 1982, when PCs were just starting to become popular and everyone figured IBM would own the world,” he said.
