I understand getting worked up over this, because it IS very upsetting.
But the more I thought about the mentality of "those people weren't good enough in the first place, so they deserved what came to them," the more I realized that this mentality is still going strong here in the US. The accusations are different, ("He's too rich," "too stupid," "too gullible," "too paranoid," etc) but the ultimate arbitrary justification for denying a human being their basic right to justice and to their rights is still alive in our own society.
So when someone tries to say that so-and-so deserve to be punished even though they weren't a criminal, I can point out that they're acting just like these people did.
