What does 'I am the way, and

What does 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me' actually mean? Is it so simple to say for sure that the followers of Jesus who wrote this sentence down understood right what he said? Maybe they misquoted him, because they did not understand what he was saying. Jesus says few times in the Gospels that only few understood him, but he does not really tell who they were. How about if he said "'I am' [is] the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me ['I am']."? That would change a lot of things in the Christian Faith!
