You can do SOME research behind the computer.
I've seen people post youtube videos showing fb pages of Sandy Hook Victims' Fundraisers being posted prior to the shootings! There's certainly a lot of strange things going on that warrant to be recorded by anyone sitting behind a computer.
If you see a telling news clip it may be worthwhile to record it and keep it for later. It may serve a evidence, for example the police were chasing down the alleged 2nd shooter at Sandy Hook. Granted I wasn't there chasing him down; I could easily record the video of news broadcast.
I don't know any method by which you can escape info being relayed through another person's perspective. That will always happen no matter what. History will always be his story. No way around it.
But doing nothing is bad. We need as many stories as we can piece together in order to corroborate a likely, accurate account.
