Sell out must be some imagined line of prosperity that if crossed makes some bad.

Notice the technique of placing a fact into your head which has not been established?

For clarification however: A sell out would be someone who takes money over doing the right thing. After watching a long train of abuses of media companies which started out good only get bought by someone bad and then it all turns to hell. (See: Facebook).

I think the question is a fair one seeing as how we may spend perhaps a few thousand hours here over the course of the next year alone bringing the news.
