It was specifically the oppression from the whole European protestant-catholic game of thrones business of which I was thinking, as well as religious rule in some of the early colonies, blue laws and all. The founding of Rhode Island comes to mind on the side of the minority as fairly significant in the creation of the nation, though obviously not the Constitution.
