I also try to give something up. This year I think I will give up any type of TV program or movie. With three boys age newborn to toddler who love sesame street and such this will be very hard, I'll have to play with them to entertain them instead. I actually stick to Chicken or Turkey as lenten meats, and try to use up things from the pantry or surplus canned goods that do not seem so appealing. Contrary to the anti-Catholic myth that the fish tradition sprung from the pope owning a fishing fleet....it actually has to do with communing with the poor. Today poor people cannot afford fish, it is more expensive even than beef. In the spirit of the poor then I eat the cheapest meats (if I eat meat at all) and try to pretend I have no grocery money, and so eat anything around that I have handy that doesn;t require me to go grocery shopping which to me is much more in line with the spirit of the fast than going out to eat at a fish fry every Friday night.
