I wasn't here yet, and my mom was in Japan during WWII

She was in her late teens, living in Yokohama. A beautiful young woman she was - I have pictures of her.

But she told me stories of the air raids by the Americans, when you had to turn out all the lights, hide, and not move as the air raid sirens wailed, and the bombs fell, and you cowered in terror hoping not to die. In the morning you saw the open trucks, filled with dead bodies in the back, bouncing along as the truck made its way down the road through town.

I must have been about 8 years old when she told me that story. I'm sure I'll never forget it.
