The body's natural immune response to inhaling smoke is to create a thin layer of mucous around the lungs - a mucous membrane that helps protect the lung cells. A membrane acts as a barrier to the cell...the membrane captures the bad particles, and then gets rid of them.

The mucous membrane immune response can be directly attributed to fire. Humans inhaled a lot of smoke for many thousands of years...just to keep warm, protect them from wild animals, and for light. Without fire, life would not exist. Early humans used fire for all kinds of beneficial things, and they all inhaled smoke virtually every day of their lives.
Ever sit around a campfire, then go home and your clothes wreak as if you could still smell the fire? Although the smoke wasn't in your face, you still breathed it in...woke up the next morning, coughed up "flem" and successfully got rid of all the bad things you breathed in thanks to your body's natural mucous membrane immune response.

So I think it would be quite beneficial to have a mucous membrane surrounding your lungs to protect them, and your body from harmful invaders flying around in the air...
I did some research on the countries that smoke the most, and compared them to the countries with the highest rates of lung cancer.
This is quite shocking.
