Grave of the Fireflies (Japanese movie 1988)

Michael, if you have not seen this animated movie, I highly recommend you grab some tissue and watch it. It’s visually beautiful and poetic although painfully sad. The setting is Japan WWII and revolves around two orphaned children. Roger Ebert (film critic) gives the movie high marks as a war movie because it depicts the horrors of war bringing it home viscerally in a thoughtful way without the distraction of political demagoguing.

Here is an introductory video that gives you a flavor of it. Last year I looked but did not find a full version video online so I bought the DVD on eBay. It has been compared to Disney’s animations as a movie classic. This is one of the saddest movies you will ever see; most who view it are deeply impacted.
