Background from a semi-local
Jefferson Co.( the name becomes more ironic every day)where this occured was originally part of Nouvelle France, and is now mostly rural farm country with a significant Amish population, home to and economically dependent on Fort Drum, (one of a very few large Army bases outside the Confederacy or the west), making it very different from what most people think of NY. Hunting and guns are common.
Hopefully the "authorities" here would never get a jury to convict a veteran of this charge. If they do, then the cause is lost and we are truly damned.
