I had that experience frequently
in my late teens, early twenties. I usually did hear and see things that weren't there, sometimes sounds from a dream would continue on after I awakened in that state. It was terrifying and it was a great relief when the experiences stopped. It's called a hypnogogic state --a type of sleeping disorder. I think what happens is your eyes open before you actually awaken -- meaning you're still in the paralysis mode of sleep, like being half awake and half asleep.
