Ive got 12 hens and three roosters, all lay big brown eggs, exept two, a bard hen and one red hen lay white ones, just can't figure out which red hen is the traitor lol. And they are noisy, roosters can be heard 1/4 mile away; love waking up to that sound. Daytime they have free run of the backyard, along with the dogs, cats, ducks, and birds; they all get along great. And you're right about the poop, great fertilizer. I too give eggs to friends and neighbors, any surplus goes to the homeless shelter. They do the work, I get the credit. lol Anyway, glad you posted, and wish you all the best with yours. BTW, in case you don't know, you can save shells and bake them, crumble them, and feed back to the chickens - free calcium. They need a lot of it for strong shells.
