If he does come out in support of that statement, it's very shocking. No amount of backpedaling on this statement will help; it can no longer be retracted.
There is no amount of "clarifying" and attempting to shift his statement from addressing the guilt of soldier, to a policy maker.
As it stands, the implication of his opinion is that all soldiers have lived by the sword, and can expect to die by the sword (and justifiably so).
