Just War Theory would hold to that Scripture. The goal is peace, at all costs, unless there is no other avenue and then the sword is used briefly, effectively and put away. Ron Paul rocks.

In the biblical context Peter was going to try and prevent Jesus from going to the cross - the ultimate gift of peace for mankind. The Lord said those words to Peter and added that He could stop this whole thing without Peter's sword, but He came to give His life as a ransom for all.

Matthew 26:51-53

51 And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish[a] by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?

The law cannot make a wicked person virtuous…God’s grace alone can accomplish such a thing.
