Corn has been used for centuries to fatten horses, cows, and pigs. It works.
If you eat cane sugar, your body knows to stop when it becomes too sweet, but corn syrup doesn't do that. You can just keep consuming it.
If you are going to limit sugar, start with corn syrup. Use real cane sugar if you must. Besides, all the corn syrup is GMO.
