I can't grasp why though. This kind of thing has been done before I suppose. Does anyone have any examples? Maybe we can elucidate the purpose of such a strategy from other past examples of controlled leaks.

Is the list just the shiniest examples of assassinations they can muster. Maybe they think they can put out some good arguments and when the backlash comes, they except a lesser role that still entitles executive breach of justice. Perhaps a pseudo court for assassinations or the reintroduction of Bills of Attainder.
