There are an estimated 250 to 300 million privately owned firearms in the U.S. The number of accidental gun deaths in children annually in the country is around 100 - 150.

On the other hand, there are less than 700 thousand doctors in the U.S.
The estimated annual number of accidental deaths in hospitals due to medical error is around 195 thousand. There is an estimated 1.8% to 2.96% medical error rate among hospitalized children. Not all of these are fatal. Your doctor has a one in three chance of killing someone accidentally this year. That doctor has a one in ten probability that someone will be a child. If you keep a gun, it is more like a one in two million chance a child will be killed by it.

When doctors have the same safety record as private firearms owners, I will look to them for advice on the subject of safety.
