First of all, your parents do not have to pay for your education. I paid for the vast majority of my education in scholarships. There are plenty of scholarships based on merit or essays.

Next, what do you love to do? Capitalize on it. Write articles and send them off for publication. Make something and sell it online. Learn a trade. There are so many options. I get that you are trying to be practical, but try going rogue. You can do whatever you want if you work really hard for it, and if you don't want to work for the government you do not have to. Create a job you love and work hard at it.
