I understand you're being a

I understand you're being a tad facetious. But I can tell you that in our district, where my son is in middle school and were I occasionally sub, there's no consensus focus even about solving quadratic equations, let alone 2 + 2. Incorrectly spelled words are not only circled in red, but spelling tests are still in vogue.

In geometry, my son's teacher did have have the students do a bit of what it appears you're deriding. Rather than have the kids simply memorize some of Euclid's formulas, he gave them the geometric problems and asked them to reason -- as Euclid did -- their way from what they already knew to more complex applications that required extensions of the proofs they'd already learned. I thought this was awesome. It's teaching a man to fish sort of learning.
