They know that he's not

They know that he's not considering going 3rd party.

They only invented that narrative to sow division among the rank-and-file in an attempt to create a subconscious desire within them to stay on the plantation (and vote for whoever they're told to) and not vote for 'that guy that might go 3rd party and make us lose again.'

It's about the only tactic they can use against him at this point.

They can't say he's 'too old'
They can't compare him to Barney Fife
He doesn't have that 'crazy uncle' vibe

The only other tactic they've got is to start calling him a 'radical'

And that won't work either.

Only the acceptance of the truth can defeat systemic evil.
