left wing protest movement, which had been around since the late 19th century; the leftists supported Dr. King because they saw his movement as a method to expand state power and influence, which had already been expanding since the Whiskey Rebellion. The liberty movement has been unable to unite even on common themes. Many of my friends read "Atlas Shrugged" in the 1950s. Senator Barry Goldwater managed to win the GOP nomination and capture 38.5% of the vote, even with the most vicious media campaign ever conducted in this nation and with the total opposition of the GOP establishment. Liberty really began to nosedive with the election of Ronald Reagan and the phoney conservatives. Reagan expanded the power of the IRS and the state at virtually every level. During the 60s, the antiwar movement nearly brought down the establishment. Now government can threaten us with virtual impunity and laughs at our token opposition. We are only inches from a "Tiananmen Square" in this country; that is the ugly truth.
