Aspartame was first developed

Aspartame was first developed as Antkiller (and it works amazingly well; just try it), but the makers decided that since it had an intensely concentrated sweetness, it could be used in very small quantities as a general sweetener. It seems that the small amount necessary to sweeten, for example, Diet Coke, not only made it economical, it made the poison factor irrelevant. This is what I was told. I was also told that it was Searle who developed the product, and when it had difficulty translating itself into a general sweetner and getting FDA approval, the owner of Searle appealed directly to Ronald Reagan, who helped. Does anyone know if this is true?
