Say you do 8 hours of work,

Say you do 8 hours of work, and your boss gives you some bits of paper in return. Well, you've clearly lost out; your work was worth more than those bits of paper. Luckily, a confidence game is in effect, and you can easily find someone else to accept the bits of paper for much more than they are worth -- that is, you don't have to accept your losses, but can knowingly, or unknowingly, pass them off.

It is theft, of a particular type known as "larceny by trick", and if you can't accept that, then surely you will allow that fraud is a form of theft.
