I'm a literal card-carrying member of the ACLU. On the whole I believe they are a great organization. Of course nobody is going to agree 100% with any organization, but here are some of the reasons why I am still happy to pay my membership dues every year.
-- They have consistently fought against the worst provisions of the PATRIOT act
-- They consistently stand up for free speech, even when such speech is unpopular on the left. Examples: they defended Citizens United free speech right to criticize Hillary Clinton and the NeoNazi's right to organize.
-- Excellent on due process and criminal justice issues
-- Advocate the elimination of the death penalty
-- Excellent on 4th amendment protections and putting limits on police
-- Exposing racial discrimination as practiced by the government
I am a little less happy with the ACLU when they talk about welfare as a civil right, but on the whole I think they do a lot of good. I also greatly respect their decision to, for the most part, stay out of the gun control debate.
