A number of towns come to mind: Flint MI, Gary IN ( http://www.forbidden-places.net/urban-exploration-gary-india...) ... Wilmington DE, Newark NJ...
Or maybe that is the cycle. Maybe once a city is no longer viable there is a short window to adapt and thrive or die. Cities have ceased to exist throughout history, its not a new phenomenon.
