So what happens to the taster if the food is poisoned?

Let's assume that the food was indeed poisoned and the taster tried it and immediately succumbed to food poisoning. Then what of the taster? Is he discarded like a lab rat? How could this so called "president" (but more like a dictator, king, or emperor) defend this action of using a person as a guinea pig to test for poison? (I suppose that's a rhetorical question.)
