Fertilization is a logical definition for placental mammals

But there is also the idea of alternation of generations which complicates the issue of life. Then there is implantation of the embryo and the development of different organs as you suggested and other debatable stages of when life begins.

Personally I believe life beginning at fertilization to be the best definition, but I do not think a fetus should gain rights until the gestational age to where it can theoretically survive outside the uterus- 22 weeks. Up until then the rights mother dominate.

I agree with your sentiments about this.
