I agree that the purpose of the site is education and activism. I will also admit that I have skipped over something on this site based on the downvotes. Let's say there is a post that piques my curiousity based on the headline. I click on it and I see a vote total of -40. My reaction to that would go from "interested" to "eh...I'll skim it instead...", thereby limiting myself to the potential information being shared here. So I am a testament to the fact that vote totals can change ones perspective of a certain Post.
So what is the solution here? We can require vote explanations, but I don't like that idea myself, and I'm sure no one else will agree to it as well.
Should the voting system itself be changed? Concurrent totals of both upvotes and downvotes for side-by-side comparison?
Should we open up voting to all DP visitors and not just members, for a "real-world" representation of reception? Perhaps a visitors counter alongside the member counter?
Until a solution is agreed upon, I will provide my 2 cents for every downvote I provide, as a courtesy to whomever I am replying to. Let's start dialogue, and educate ourselves. Let's also be humble with ourselves and rememember that, as individuals, we may NOT know everything. I have done countless HOURS of research towards liberty, and sometimes I still feel "ignorant". That is why I am a member here... my fellow DPers are brilliant. A "vote" shouldn't replace REAL CONVERSATION...
