Having It Both Ways

They wish they could have it both ways:

A dog's alert is evidence. Therefore, it's probable cause for a search.

A dog doesn't need a search warrant or probable cause to sniff private property for evidence, because a dog's alert is not evidence.

Clearly, the dog feels no such conflict.
