I feel sorry for banks and insurance company owners and managers. They have been made puppets of government. They have lost their autonomy.
True, some of this happened because of abuses, but instead of putting them in jail (if appropriate) or letting the free market drive them to reform or go bankrupt (consumers are even more powerful than voters), they punished those who were good.
Naturally, they fight back by buying as many in Congress as they can, but it's not nearly as fun and effective as a free market would be, and it's very hard on the smaller, more local, banks and insurance companies.
And, it makes new ones nearly impossible. The underside of my mattress is looking more secure.
