Some of the Founders used both

Christianity and the enlightenment ideas. Almost all of the Founders were Christian to one degree or another, but many of them had been influenced by the enlightenment. Guys like Patrick Henry and Benjamin Rush did not buy into the enlightenment. It was not an either/or situation--both sets of ideals were present in the Founders' thinking.
