What I Believe, Confess, and Hope For - Part 4: Destiny

While I affirm that we are married to Christ in the here and now, I also believe that there will come a more perfect and complete manifestation of our relationship with him. We are being prepared, transformed by Christ into the bride he is worthy of; our robes are being washed and made "white in the blood of the Lamb" (Revelation 7:14 KJV). Our hearts will be stirred to joy as the momentous day approaches:

“Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” - Revelation 19:6-8 NIV

The time will come when Christ returns to call us up to be with him in heaven. We will share in his kingdom, but, more importantly, we will give ourselves to him, and he to us, in a way that we cannot fully experience now. Nothing will remain hidden, for we shall see him "face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV). We will spend eternity becoming more and more like him, and will be able to experience his love -- and return it to him -- to an ever increasing degree.

This is my hope, the "prize" for which I run the "race" (1 Corinthians 9:24 KJV). In 1866, Samuel John Stone composed The Church's One Foundation:

I have taken this well known hymn and modified it (the last two stanzas below are mostly my own work); as modified, it expresses well the hope that I have:

The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is his new creation, by water and the Word.
From heaven he came and sought her, to be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
And toward one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

The Church shall never perish! Her dear Lord will defend,
Shall guide, sustain and cherish, be with her to the end.
Though there be those who hate her, and false sons in her pale,
Against the foe and traitor she ever will prevail.

While she on earth has union with God the Three and One
(Yea, mystic sweet communion with her Husband the Son!),
She waits in expectation, 'till caught up to his side,
In perfect consummation, she's crowned his royal bride!

Christ's kingdom ends not ever, and his queen she will be;
Filled with his love forever! Bound, yet so truly free.
Transformed into his likeness, sharing his glory throne,
Blessed, worshiping his Highness, knowing as she is known!
