Yeah, carbs and fiber tend to co-exist, if you're not getting one, you're not getting the other either, though Atkins addresses this through supplements and gradual uptake in carbs.
I think the paleolithic diet works for good health but not because our ancestors used to eat like this or anything. It is pretty well established that early man mostly ate veggies. He wasn't fast or strong enough to get meat on a very regular basis.
Paleo diet is just good nutrition. Cutting out all refined sugars is the most important step I think one can take if they have a tendency to gain weight (which is everybody right? =P).
