It is pretty well established that early man mostly ate veggies. He wasn't fast or strong enough to get meat on a very regular basis.

Unlikely. The selection pressure would be for those capable of hunting and gathering the better fuel source: fat. Nature will optimize on the better fuel source. That means those capable of obtaining it will have a better chance of passing on their genes.
