It is really expensive.

And there are no guarantees. I know people who have paid upwards of $10,000 and waited years to only be denied citizenship. Attorney fees alone can run into the $5000 range. The spousal assistance is not helpful unless the immigrant has not set foot into the US. Now, since surveillance is so sophisticated once the immigrant (wannabe) sets foot into the US there is a record of it. So, either finding a job or joining a civil union are basically impossible for a person of disadvantaged economic means.
