Hits and visitors are not the

Hits and visitors are not the same. Hits include any files downloaded from the webserver. It's possible to design pages that receive hundreds, thousands or really any number of hits with just a single page view. "Hits" is a relic metric and does not carry the actual meaning as what is often implied. 100,000 "hits" per minute might actually mean 5,000 visitors per minute each downloading an average of 20 files (which is very possible considering the number of images, javascripts, css and other files downloaded with many webpages).
