I think at least part of it is the sports team mentality so many Bostonians have. Remember, this is the city where so much as wearing a Yankees cap will likely get you punched in the face (in certain neighborhoods, anyway).
Also, most people in my generation (and a little younger) have no 'counterculture'. Nearly every aspect of the pop culture these college kids digest screams "conform or be left behind". If someone in a perceived position of power tells you to cheer nonsensical jingoist slogans, then you better damn well do it, or risk being ostracized. Le gasp!
